Bacteriostatic water is water that contains a small amount of benzyl alcohol (commonly 0.9%). The benzyl alcohol is bacteriostatic — it inhibits the growth of bacteria — which is what allows a vial to be accessed more than once over a period of time under proper handling.
Bacteriostatic vs. sterile water
Sterile water contains no preservative and is generally intended for single use. Bacteriostatic water's preservative is what supports multi-draw use of a reconstituted research solution, making it a common choice as a reconstitution solvent in the lab.
Why it pairs with lyophilized peptides
Because many research peptides are supplied in multi-milligram vials that a lab draws from across a protocol, a bacteriostatic solvent helps keep the reconstituted solution usable across that window. Storage (refrigerated, protected from light) and a lab's own established stability limits still apply.
